Film Wedding Photography in Turkey — Analogue and Super 8

35mm, Portra 400 and Super 8 alongside digital coverage at weddings across Turkey — what film changes, and why we never guarantee it.

We photograph weddings in Turkey on film — 35mm and medium format, running alongside our digital coverage. A Contax G1, Kodak Portra 400, and sometimes a Super 8 camera moving quietly through the evening. We are based in İzmir and work across Bodrum, Çeşme, Istanbul and the Aegean coast. Film is never the whole delivery. It is the part couples keep returning to.

What does shooting on film actually change?

Digital gives you everything. Film gives you fewer frames, slower — thirty-six to a roll, no screen to check afterwards. The difference shows up in two places.

The first is the image itself. Grain sits inside the picture rather than on top of it, so skin keeps a softness that no preset reproduces honestly. Portra 400 holds warmth in Aegean light without pushing it orange, and it forgives the middle of the day, when the sun is high and unkind.

The second is behaviour. A Contax G1 is small and almost silent. Guests stop performing for it. There is no screen for anyone to lean over, so the moment ends when it ends.

On a wedding day we usually expose four or five rolls. Around a hundred and fifty frames, against several thousand digital ones. Those hundred and fifty are the ones that get framed.

Is Super 8 worth it at a wedding?

Super 8 is texture, not coverage. It will not document your day — three minutes of film runs through the camera in three minutes, and there is no sound.

What it does give you is motion that reads as memory rather than record. A veil lifting. Someone laughing at a table you walked past. The grain moves, the exposure shifts as a cloud passes, and the result looks the way people remember evenings rather than the way cameras see them.

We run it alongside the main film, never instead of it. A Handycam does similar work in a different register — closer, rougher, more like something a cousin would have shot in 1998. Couples who want that texture usually want a small amount of it. Two or three minutes inside a finished film is enough to change how the whole thing feels.

What can go wrong with film — and what we tell couples

We do not guarantee analogue frames. This is worth saying plainly, because most people selling film at weddings do not say it.

The cameras are old. Film can fail to wind. A roll can be exposed incorrectly, fogged, or damaged in the lab — and once that happens, the frames are gone. There is no backup file. We have shot film long enough to keep this rare, but rare is not never.

So analogue never replaces the digital coverage. Your wedding is documented properly, in full, on digital. Film runs beside it as a second layer, and when it comes back well, it tends to be the layer you love most.

Couples who understand this are the ones film suits. If the idea of losing a frame is unbearable, film is not the right choice, and we will say so.

Where we photograph film weddings in Turkey

Most of our work sits along the Aegean. Bodrum and Çeşme in summer, Alaçatı for its stone streets and low afternoon light, Urla and the İzmir countryside for weddings held among olive trees. Istanbul is different work — interiors, marble, and the particular light that comes off the Bosphorus late in the day.

Film behaves differently in each. Coastal light at seven in the evening is generous and forgiving. Istanbul interiors are not; there we shoot a faster stock or accept the grain that comes with it.

We travel for weddings across Turkey and into Europe. Being based here means we already know how the light falls at these venues in June and how it falls in October — which, with thirty-six frames and no second chance, is most of the job.

How film fits alongside digital and video

One team covers all of it. The same people shoot your digital photographs, your wedding film, and the analogue frames — which matters more than it sounds, because it means nobody is competing for the same moment.

Editing, colour and the final cut stay with us. That is where the consistency comes from: the digital images are graded to sit next to the film, not against it, so the delivered set reads as one body of work rather than two.
